LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 CSUB water polo team finished in 10th place at the UC San Diego Tournament Sunday by going 1-1 on the final day. The 'Runners began the day with a 9-5 victory over WWPA foe Santa Clara. In the second game, CSUB fell to No. 14 Hartwick, 13-10 to finish in 10th place.

In the first game, it was the CSUB defense that took center stage, blanking the Broncs in two of the four quarters. Jessica Manke and Becky Seelos each scored two goals for the 'Runners while Katherine Gillett, Amanda Ortiz, Shannon McKenzie, Petra Koudelkova and C.J. Longueay each scored one. Veronica Campbell, who played the first half in goal, had five blocks. Freshman Megan Wetherbee, who played the second half, finished with three blocks for the 'Runners.

"It was a really good defensive game for us," Head Coach Jason Gall said. "We played really solid and it showed with the two shutout quarters. Megan Wetherbee did a nice job in the cage for us in the second half. It was a good all around game for us."

In the second game, the 'Runners took on No. 14 Hartwick in the ninth place game. After falling behind 7-3 in the second quarter, CSUB battled back to tie the game 8-8 in the third. After knotting the game at 9-9 early in the fourth, Hartwick pulled away, scoring four of the game's final five goals. Campbell who played all four quarters finished with 11 blocks. Alyson Moss led the Roadrunners with three goals. Becky Seelos, McKenzie and Koudelkova scored two goals each while Ortiz added one.

"The weekend as a whole was good for us," Gall said. "Some of our bench players got some more playing time which will help us deepen our rotation for later of the season. There are still a lot of games left this season but I saw some good things today which is encouraging."
