No. 15 Water Polo Defeats Concordia?Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. ? Freshman Shannon McKenzie scored four goals and senior Petra Koudelkova added three as the No. 15 CSUB water polo team defeated Concordia Irvine, 12-11, Friday afternoon in at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. Katherine Gillett, Amanda Ortiz, Alyson Moss and Lexy Mitchell all scored one goal for the ?Runners as they improved to 4?1 on the season.

While the Roadrunners never trailed in the game, things got interesting in the fourth quarter as Concordia scored with 52 seconds remaining to tie the contest at 11?11. But Shannon McKenzie scored 11 seconds later to give CSUB the win with her fourth goal of the contest.

“We are going into the weekend about to play some top-ranked teams and it was good for our squad to get some experience,” Head Coach Jason Gall said. “Everyone got to play today and hopefully they got a little more comfortable on the offensive and defensive end of the pool. We just need to take that experience and build off it.”

Senior Veronica Campbell had three blocks in the first quarter before giving way to freshman Megan Wetherbee who played the final three quarters to finish with four blocks.

CSUB will head south to the UC San Diego Invitational which will begin Saturday and run through Sunday. The ?Runners will play Michigan in the first round of pool play at 11:30 a.m.
