SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.
- The CSUB women's basketball team spoiled Cal Poly's senior day festivities
Saturday evening, defeating the Mustangs, 76-66, at Mott Gym in San Luis
Obispo. The win moves CSUB's record to 18-10 on the season with one game
remaining. Cal Poly drops to 18-9 with the loss. The ?Runners are now 8-2
against Big West opponents this season, one of those losses coming at the hands
of Cal Poly back on January 27 in the Icardo Center.
Senior Christine Kepenekian (Burbank HS) recorded her ninth
double-double halfway through the contest with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the
first half. She finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Katie Williams
(Las Vegas/Reedley College) had 17 points to reach double-figures for her 16th
consecutive game. Classmate Phynique Allen (San Diego/Eastern Washington) added
11 points and senior Krista Arase (Monterey Park/Keppel HS) had 13.
The ?Runners shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) from the field but
were outrebounded, 49-41. CSUB's defense forced 15 turnovers held the Mustangs
to just 21-for-27 shooting from the field (29.1 percent). Morgan Saso
(Bakersfield/Univ. of New Mexico)
had three blocks as the ?Runners tied a season-high with six team blocked
shots.
Cal Poly missed its first six shots of the contest before
hitting back-to-back three pointers to give the Mustangs an early 6-3 lead.
Phynique Allen made CSUB's first shot of the game and added a free throw to
account for all of the Roadrunner points almost six minutes in.
The Roadrunners used a 12-1 run late in the half to open up
a 15 point advantage, 36-21, with 2:23
remaining in the half.
At the break, CSUB led 40-27. While turnovers (10) slowed
the ?Runners on the offensive end of the court, it was their defense that
helped keep them in control of the first half, holding the Mustangs to just 27
percent (10-for-37) shooting.
The game got close late in the second as Cal Poly made it an
eight-point game with just over a minute left, 72-64. But Arase, the program's all-time leading free
throw shooter, calmly knocked down four free throws to ice the game for the
?Runners.
Cal Poly's Megan Harrison was the Mustangs' leading scorer
with 26 points and 21 rebounds. Kristina Santiago, who scored 29 points against
the ?Runners in the first meeting, scored 20 points and had four blocked shots.
The game began on an unusual note as the jump ball was tied
up immediately on the tip. Saso, who stands 6-feet 3-inches, and Poly's Tamara Wells,
who is 5-foot 6-inches tall, were brought back to center court for a re-jump
that CSUB controlled.
Be sure to catch the CSUB senior class' final game on
Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Icardo
Center as the ?Runners take on the
University of the Pacific on Senior Sendoff day. Seniors Kepenekian,
Arase, Saso and Nikhol West will be honored in a pre-game
ceremony before taking the court for the final time in a Roadrunner jersey.
