DAVIS, Calif.
- Every CSUB women's basketball player that saw the court scored Wednesday
evening as the Roadrunners defeated the UC Davis Aggies, 80-71, in the Pavilion
in Davis, Calif.
The win improves CSUB's record to 17-10 while Davis
drops to 9-17. The ?Runners are now 7-2 against Big West opponents. This was
the first meeting between the two programs since the 2004 season. The all-time
series now stands at 8-1 in favor of CSUB.
Junior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College) had one of
her strongest games of the season as she grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds and
scored a game-high 30 points to lead the ?Runners. Williams has now reached
double-digit scoring totals in 15 consecutive games. Her 21 second half points
help CSUB secure the win over its former CCAA rival. Senior Christine
Kepenekian (Burbank HS) added 14 to the cause. The ?Runners shot 47.1 percent (33-for-70)
from the field but were just 4-of-8 (50 percent) from the charity stripe. Davis
was 27-for-56 from the field (48.2 percent) and hit 11 three pointers. CSUB
held a 41-29 rebound advantage over UC Davis.
The Aggies would hit three of their first five attempts from
behind the arc to stay close to the ?Runners early in the first half. Up 14-13,
Tiffany Belt responded with CSUB's first triple to extend the lead to 17-13 at
the under 12 minute timeout.
Davis would pull
to within one as Lisa Peterson hit a jumper in the lane to bring the score to
21-20. Kepenekian answered with her first triple of the game and Williams
converted a fast break layup to bring the lead back up to 26-20 with 7:20 remaining.
At the break, CSUB held a 40-35 advantage. Kepenekian led
the way with 10 points in the first 20 minutes while Williams had nine. The
Roadrunner defense forced nine first half Aggie turnovers and converted the
opportunities into 16 points.
In the second half, Williams came out firing, scoring 10
points in just under four minutes as she hit two threes and added a couple
layups to give the ?Runners a 17 point lead, 53-37, early.
Davis would get
as close as nine late as Genevieve Costello hit two of her five three pointers
on the evening in the closing minutes but CSUB remained firmly in control
throughout the half.
The ?Runners head to San Luis Obispo
for a Saturday contest against Cal Poly at 4
p.m. The Mustangs beat CSUB, 76-67, back on January 27 in the Icardo
Center.
