Record?Setting Defense Leads CSUB Over Utah Valley

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
The CSUB women's basketball team turned in a dominating defensive performance Wednesday evening at the Icardo Center, defeating the Utah Valley Wolverines, 78–36. CSUB is now 3–4 while Utah Valley drops to 3–8.

CSUB set six defensive program records Wednesday night. The 36 total points allowed eclipses the 37 previous point total from Nov. 21, 2003, against Western Oregon. The 14 Utah Valley second half points sets the record for fewest points in a second half allowed. The Wolverines were held to just 12 field goals all evening, another Roadrunner program record. The four second–half field goals ties the CSUB record for fewest in a half. The 'Runners also came away with a program–best 33 steals, besting the mark of 28 set back on Nov. 17, 2006, against Hawaii Pacific. Finally, senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas, Nev./Reedley College) set an individual program record with 11 steals.

Katie Williams added 11 points to go with her record–setting 11 steals for her first double-double of the year. She has now scored in double–figures in 24–consecutive games. Junior Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento State) scored a career high 19 points and pulled down 10 boards for her first double-double. Senior Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) led all scorers with 21 points, hitting a season–high four three pointers. Allen also added eight steals.

CSUB controlled the from the opening tip, jumping to an early nine point advantage, 11–2. The lead would increase to 15 on a Tiffany Belt (Bakersfield, Calif./West HS) three pointer with 8:50 remaining in the half. After Utah Valley cut the lead to nine, 25–16, the Roadrunners finished the half on a 20–6 run for a 45–22 halftime advantage, their biggest halftime lead of the season.

The Roadrunners defense stood strong to begin the second half, allowing just two points in the first 11–plus minutes. The CSUB lead would expand to a game–high 46 points, 70–24, as freshman Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) converted a fast–break layup. The lead would not dip under 40 points the rest of the game as the Roadrunners cruised to a 42–point victory over the Wolverines.

Julie Smith (10) and Jenna Johnson (14) each scored in double–digits for Utah Valley. The Wolverines had 43 turnovers and managed just one steal.

CSUB will look to continue the momentum as it hits the road on Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Santa Clara University.
