BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSUB women's basketball player Tiffany Belt (Bakersfield, Calif./West HS) certainly won't forget the Roadrunners' 105–75 victory Saturday evening against Hawaii in the Icardo Center. The senior guard got the starting nod for the first time in over a year and promptly responded with a career–high six three pointers. She also tied a career high with 19 points and came within one assist (3) of tying that mark.
As a team, the Roadrunners (1–2) hit a program–record 15 shots from beyond the arc as they picked up their first win of the season. For Hawaii (1–2), this completes a week–long three–game swing to the mainland. The Rainbow Wahine beat UC Riverside, 63–58, on Tuesday before falling to UCLA on Thursday, 98–52. The 105 CSUB points is the highest total the program has ever scored against an NCAA DI program and it's first 100–plus point outing since Feb. 10, 2006, against Cal state Stanislaus (103–60. The high scoring total was due in large part to the Roadrunners shooting a hot 53.3 percent (32–60) from the field and 53.6 percent from deep (15–28).
Senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas, Nev./Reedley College) led the way with a game–high 27 points, extending her personal double–digit scoring streak to 20 contests. Her eight rebounds were also a team–best. She tied a couple of her career highs on Saturday with five steals and four three pointers. Williams was dominant in the first half, scoring 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Freshman Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had a breakout game, scoring a new career–best 17 points, connecting on 3–of-5 from deep. She also came away with four steals, a new high. Seniors Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) and Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) also reached double–digit point totals, scoring 12 and 11, respectively.
The Roadrunners' largest lead of 32 came with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. Hawaii led for the first minute and a half of the game before the Roadrunners took control. Thirty two total first half fouls slowed the game drastically as each team had to make adjustments, both in play and in personnel.
Play got back to normal in the second half as CSUB extended its advantage. Timely three pointers from Belt and Amber Williams kept Hawaii from ever gaining ground and a full court press utilized by the Roadrunners helped caused 13 Rainbow Wahine turnovers.
CSUB returns to action on Monday against UC Irvine. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center. For ticket information, call 661–654–BLUE!
