First Half Strikes Push Seattle Past Roadrunners

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
Sophomore Kassi Massey (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) netted her third goal of the season but the CSUB women's soccer team fell to the Seattle University Redhawks, 3–1, Friday evening on the Main Soccer Field. The Redhawks scored three goals in the first half and allowed just the one second half strike from Massey to move to 6–9–1 on the season. The loss drops the Roadrunners to 4–9–2. For the Breast Cancer Awareness game, CSUB wore pink jerseys and the lines on the Main Soccer Field were tinted pink as well.

Seattle's Jamie Coe scored in the sixth minute of play and then assisted in the 19th minute on Jamie Peterson's goal. In the 23rd minute, Kara Kuttler netted her team–leading eighth goal of the season on a shot that just cleared the outstretched glove of sophomore Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC).

The Roadrunners had a few chances in the opening session. Junior Alexandria Ngo (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento State) threaded a ball to sophomore Kristina Martin Del Campo (San Jose, Calif./Piedmont Hills HS) that cleared the last defender but was just out of reach for a touch. With 10 minutes remaining in the first, freshman Yesenia Reyes (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview HS) played a ball into classmate Brittany Thomas (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview HS), but Thomas' shot sailed just high of the cross bar.

In the second half, CSUB immediately started pushing forward, looking for opportunities to cut into the Seattle lead. In the 67th minute, Reyes played a ball into the box and found junior Denise Hernandez (Tulare, Calif./Fresno City College). Hernandez gave it a quick touch to redirect it to Massey who fired a ball into the back of the net. The assists were the first points of the season for Hernandez and Reyes.

Despite pushing forward, the 'Runners were unable to close the deficit and fell, 3–1. Seattle held a 14–7 shot advantage. CSUB held a 3–2 advantage in corner kicks. Gause finished the evening with three saves. Madison Goverde also had three saves for Seattle.

“We didn't come out the way we needed to tonight,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “I am dissapointed in our mentality and our leadership. Both of which we had none of tonight.”

CSUB will have a week to prepare for its next game on Friday, Oct. 23, as the Roadrunners travel to Cal State Northridge to take on the Matadors at 2:30 p.m.
