FULLERTON, Calif. ? Manny Guzman's diving header midway through the first “golden goal” overtime period gave the CSUB men's soccer team a 3-2 win over Cal State Fullerton in the final match of the Cal State Fullerton tournament Sunday at Titan Stadium.
Unable to break through for a goal in the first three matches of the season, the Roadrunners (1-3 overall) found the back of the net three consecutive times Sunday, coming back from a 2-0 deficit early in the overtime win.
“We've been playing really well, we just haven't caught any breaks,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “This was a huge win for us today, and to come back from down 2-0 showed a lot of character.”
Cal State Fullerton's Celso Alvarez struck just 3:12 into the match, connecting his head to a Jacob Shumway cross for the early lead. Alvarez accounted for the Titans' second goal as well, slotting a ball past Bakersfield keeper Steve Trojanwoski in the 30th minute.
Towa Manda brought the ?Runners to within one just two minutes later, sending a 25-yard volley into the back of the net after receiving a ball from Wayne Lampart.
Bakersfield kept the pressure on in the second half, and in the 68th minute, Lampart set up Oscar Coppieters for a 15-yard back-post shot from the left side of the box.
In overtime, a Fullerton foul at the 96:10 mark set up a CSUB free kick outside the box. Sean Jarvis sent the free ball in front of the goalmouth, where Guzman's diving header found the back of the net for the win.
Both teams recorded 14 shots in the match, with Bakersfield getting off the only shot in overtime. After giving up the two early goals, CSUB's Trojanowski settled in to make five saves. The Titans' Trevor Whiddon had four.
The ?Runners will look to build on Sunday's win as they head to New York next week, taking on Iona and Long Island University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
