IRVINE, Calif.
- Kristina Martin del Campo and Michelle Martinez each tallied goals Sunday
afternoon as the CSUB women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Weber
State to conclude the UC Irvine Invitational.
The ?Runners improve to 4-5-1
on the season while the Wildcats drop to 2-5-1. CSUB and Saint Mary's, who played the 'Runners to a 1-1 tie on Friday, were named tournament co-champions.
In the 36th minute, Martin del Campo collected a rebound off a shot
by classmate Kassi Massey to put the ?Runners up, 1-0. The goal was Martin Del Campo's
first collegiate strike and gave her three points for the tournament after
assisting on Maritza Rumbo's goal on Friday. The assist was Massey's second of
the year.
Weber State
would get the equalizer in the 62nd minute off the foot of Ari Wood from 25
yards out. The goal was Wood's second of the season.
With 16:30 left
in the match, Martinez gook a pass
from sophomore Sarah Gaskins in the left corner and found the back of the net
for her second goal of the season. The Roadrunners would hold strong for the
remainder of the game to pick up their fourth victory of the season.
Marina Constantinou made four saves for the ?Runners. Weber
State outshot CSUB, 14-9, and held
a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"We are happy with the win," said Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. "We are back to scoring goals again and hope it can carry over into next weekend."
The 'Runners took home five honors from the weekend's tournament. Sophomore midfielder Alexandria Ngo was named co-MVP along with Ashley Nied of Saint Mary's. Martinez was named to the all-tournament team along with teammates Jackie Torvestad, Jamie Havelin and Rumbo.
CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field on Friday as Sacramento
State visits for a 7 p.m. match.
