IRVINE, Calif.
- The CSUB women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie in the 73rd minute Friday
night against Saint Mary's but gave up a late goal and tied with the Gaels,
1-1.
The ?Runners (3-5-1) saw freshman Maritza Rumbo score her
first goal of the season to go up, 1-0, but a blast from the Gaels' (4-3-1)
Ashley Dernbach in the 88th minute sent the game to extra time. Freshman
Kristina Martin Del Campo picked up the first assist of her collegiate career.
CSUB goalkeeper Marina Constantinou made eight saves in
goals while Tara Larson made three for Saint Mary's. CSUB was outshot, 16-8,
including 5-0 in the extra frame. Senior Michelle Martinez had two shots on
goal to lead the ?Runners.
“We should have won the game in regulation,” Head Coach
Nicole Van Dyke explained, “but we could have just as easily lost in overtime.
Defensively, (senior Jackie) Torvestad and (freshman Jamie) Havelin played
excellent today.”
CSUB will face Weber
State on Sunday at noon to conclude the UC Irvine Tournament. This
will be the first meeting between the two schools.
