Lions Strike Early; Hold off Roadrunners, 3-0

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUB women's soccer team found itself down early to the Loyola Marymount Lions Friday night at the Main Soccer Field and were unable to recover, dropping the contest, 3?0. LMU scored a little more than two minutes into the game and added two more insurance markers in the first. CSUB put together a couple good scoring chances but were unable to capitalize. The loss moves the ?Runners back to 3?4 while LMU improves to 3?2?1.

The Lions Lauren Shanklin collected a rebound in the box from freshman goalie Marina Constantnou to put the first tally up on the board. The goal was Shanklin's team-leading third strike of the season. Lacey Bartels headed in a pass from Lily Sorentino in the 15th minute and Brittney Sanford connected with Erin Rementer in the 33rd to account for the other LMU goals.

Freshman Sarina Coutin provided the ?Runners with a spark in late in the first as she forced LMU keeper Allyssa Clark to make a great save, punching the ball up over the crossbar.

Early in the second, freshman Jamie Havelin almost connected with classmate Kassi Massey on a clean breakaway but the ball went just past the streaking forward.

“We played good soccer tonight,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “We just had three mistakes on three balls that led to three goals.”

LMU outshot the ?Runners, 9?6, but CSUB matched the Lions with three shots on goal. Clark finished the game with three saves for LMU.

The ?Runners will host San Diego on Sunday at 6 p.m. on the Main Soccer Field.
