OREM, Utah ? CSUB's quest for the first winning season among its NCAA Division I team sports became quite a bit more arduous Friday after Utah Valley University upset the Roadrunner softball team twice, sweeping a doubleheader 6?4 and 6?1 at MSTAR Field in Orem.
CSUB (22?23 overall) must sweep Utah Valley in a doubleheader Saturday to become the first Roadrunner team in the NCAA Division I era of CSUB athletics to finish with a winning record. Utah Valley improved to 14?32 with the sweep.
Things started well fro the Roadrunners Friday when they scored three runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. But Utah Valley responded with a five spot in the bottom of the first on the strength of home runs from Cherlyn McGraw and Kylee Steadman.
Bakersfield got back to within 5?4 when Bethany Snow singled in a run in the third inning. But Lauren Augino's first collegiate home run in the fifth made gave the Wolverines and ultimately superfluous insurance run.
UVU used the long ball to earn to complete the sweep, hitting three more home runs in the nightcap. All three home runs and all six runs came in a mammoth third inning. Cara Klein's RBI single in the sixth helped CSUB avoid the shutout at the hands of Utah Valley starter Natalie Bramwell, who threw two complete games Friday, allowing just three earned runs.
Bramwell entered the week with a 4.88 ERA, yet she continued to flummox CSUB, who also had trouble scoring against her when the 'Runners took 3-of-4 games from the Wolverines in Bakersfield in April.
