Water Polo Falls To Ranked Opponents At UC Davis Shootout

DAVIS, Calif. - First quarter leads and strong defensive efforts were not enough for the CSUB women's water polo team Sunday as the Roadrunners fell 5-4 to No. 11 nationally ranked Loyola Marymount and 12-7 to No. 10 UC Davis at the UC Davis Shootout.

“Overall we had a good weekend,” said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. “We had six shutout quarters, our defense was solid all weekend and these were good confidence games for us.”

Bakersfield went up 3-2 through the first period against Loyola Marymount on goals by Amanda Ortiz, Petra Koudelkova and Katherine Gillett. After holding the Lions scoreless in the second period, and getting a goal by Jessica Manke, the 'Runners could not find the back of the net for all of the second half.

Loyola tied the game 4-4 midway through the fourth period before Carrie Kosnik scored the game-winner at the 2:18 mark.

Veronica Campbell had 10 blocks and two steals in goal for CSUB, while Gillett and C.J. Longeuay chipped in three steals each.

“This was one of our best defensive games of the year,” said Gall. “We just had some opportunities offensively that we didn't convert on.”

Against host UC Davis, the 'Runners once again led after the first period, this time 4-3. The momentum swung in favor of the Aggies in the second period, however, as they outscored Bakersfield 5-1, taking an 8-5 advantage into the half. To make matters worse for the 'Runners, Ortiz, the national leader in goals scored, was forced to the bench with 21 seconds remaining in the half after being served with her third ejection of the game.

Without Ortiz for the second half, CSUB managed just two second half goals, while the Aggies netted four goals to open up a five-goal lead.

Ortiz led the 'Runners with three goals, while Becky Seelos added two. Longeuay and Koudelkova rounded out the scoring with one goal each, while in goal, Campbell collected 14 blocks.

Bakersfield, now 17-15 overall and 9-5 in the Western Water Polo Association, close out the regular season Saturday with matches at conference foe Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal.
