DAVIS, Calif. ? The CSUB women's water
polo team put together two solid defensive performances Saturday,
defeating Western Water Polo Association opponents Colorado State,
13-3, and Santa Clara, 5-4 at the UC Davis Shootout.
The Roadrunners improve their overall
record to 17-13, while they move to 9-3 in the WWPA.
In the morning match-up with Colorado
State, the 'Runners' Amanda Ortiz led an early charge with three
first period goals. CSUB shut out the Rams in the first half,
carrying a 6-0 lead into the break. Colorado State matched the
'Runners' scoring in the third period with each teams netting a trio
of goals, but CSUB put the defensive clamp on in the fourth with a
4-0 scoring advantage in the period.
“The last time we played Colorado
State we won 9-6 and were never up by more than two or three goals,”
said Bakersfield Head Coach Jason Gall. “This time we came out with
a lot of intensity and played great defense.”
Veronica Campbell turned in a solid
game in goal, collecting 11 blocks and four steals. Ortiz finished
with five goals, while Jessica Manke, Petra Koudelkova and Becky
Seelos added two apiece. Jessica Kelley and Katherine Gillett rounded
out the scoring with one goal each, while Manke added a team-high
four assists.
In the nightcap game against No. 16
nationally ranked Santa Clara, the 'Runners held off a late surge for
their third single-goal win of the season over the Broncos.
Santa Clara used early goals by Amy
Lamb and Christie Miller to take a 2-0 lead just 1:03 in to the game.
But the Broncos did not find the back of the net again until midway
through the fourth quarter. In the meantime, Bakersfield got two
goals from Ortiz and one each from Koudelkova and Gillett to take a
4-3 lead into the final period.
In the fourth Santa Clara cut the lead
to 4-3 on a penalty shot at the 4:43 mark. Just 30 seconds later,
Ortiz responded, tallying her third goal of the game to give the
'Runners a 5-3 lead. The Broncos managed a fourth goal with two
minutes remaining, but Bakersfield held on for the narrow win.
Campbell had 21 blocks in goal while
Gillett and C.J. Longeuay contributed two steals each.
Bakersfield will look to pick up
another pair of conference wins on Sunday, facing No. 11 Loyola Marymount at
