Seelos, Koudelkova Lift CSUB To Win Over Otters

LOS ANGELES ? Becky Seelos poured in five goals and Petra Koudelkova added four as the CSUB women's water polo team claimed a 13-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at the Western Water Polo Association Championships at the Burns Recreation & Aquatics Center on the Loyola Marymount campus.

The No. 4 seeded Roadrunners (19-17 overall) advance to take on No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino Sunday at 1 p.m. in the fifth place match.

A first half outburst by Santa Clara doomed the 'Runners in Friday's loss, but on Saturday, CSUB used the same tactic in putting away the Otters (17-13 overall). Midway through the first period, a goal by Seelos and and two by Koudelkova broke a 1-1 tie to give the 'Runners a 4-1 lead.

Bakersfield went on to score four more in the second period, taking an 8-2 lead into the break.

"We looked like a completely different team from yesterday," said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. "Today was a great game for team morale."

In the third period, the 'Runners kept the pressure on with goals by Katherine Gillett and Seelos, while the Otters got a pair of scores by Stephanie Salvi to keep the spread at six, 10-4.

At the 5:47 mark of the fourth period, Monterey Bay's Erin Lee scored to make it a 10-5 game, but Seelos and Koudelkova quickly responded with a goal apiece and C.J. Longueay added the 'Runners' final score with 1:37 remaining.

Amanda Ortiz, the nation's leader in goals and goals per game, was held scoreless on two shots, but a combined nine goals from Seelos and Koudelkova, along with two from Gillett and one each from Loneguay and Jessica Manke provided the 'Runners with plenty of offense.

"Teams do look to double up on Amanda and she did a good job today of getting her teammates involved," said Gall.

Gillett contributed seven assists and Koudelkova drew five ejections while defensively, Veronica Campbell recorded 20 blocks in goal.
