LAS CRUCES, NM ? The CSUB softball team has made a living this season with late?inning rallies and last at?bat victories. New Mexico State gave the Roadrunners a taste of their own medicine Sunday afternoon, scoring once in the sixth and again with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 4?3 win in the finale of a three?game series at the NMSU Softball Complex.
NMSU (24-28 overall) took two of three games to win the series. CSUB dipped below .500 (20-21) with the loss.
Vanessa Valles singled down the left field line with two outs in the sixth to tie the game at 3?3. The Aggies then used a pair of two?out singles and a passed ball to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
The Roadrunners had their share of chances to blow the game open before the final inning. CSUB had baserunners in all seven innings and had at least two runners on in five innings. CSUB placed runners on second and third with less than two outs three times, but managed just one run in those opportunities.
Second baseman Cara Klein was enchanted with her first trip to New Mexico, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI Sunday. She finished the three?game series 6-for-11, raising her batting average to a team?leading .361 for the season.
Rightfielder Bethany Snow, centerfielder Pikake Nutter?Gaudet and first baseman Kelli Bailey also collected two hits apiece for the 'Runners. Snow added her 13th double of the season and scored a pair of runs.
Hoku Nohara and Brittany Clifton each homered to pace the 11?hit NMSU attack.
CSUB returns to action Thursday afternoon when it travels to Southern California for a doubleheader against Big West Conference member UC Riverside.
