LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The CSUB women's water polo team gutted out a 7-6 win over Western Water Polo Association leader Santa Clara Saturday, then won big, 14-3, over Chapman University to close out action at the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles.
The Roadrunners, who improve to 10-9 on the season, took an early 3-1 lead over the Broncos, but then saw the advantage slip away in the second period as Santa Clara reeled off three consecutive points to hold a 4-3 lead at the half. Two third period goals by CSUB's Amanda Ortiz helped tie the game, 5-5, before the Broncos went up 6-5 with 6:23 remaining in the game.
Not to be outdone, CSUB rallied late with goals by Petra Koudelkova and Brittany Berry in the final three minutes to claim the win.
Koudelkova finished with four goals while Ortiz had two and Berry had one. Veronica Campbell totaled 17 blocks in goal for CSUB.
Ortiz led the charge against Chapman, tallying three of her game-high five goals in the first half as the ?Runners jumped out to an 8-0 halftime lead.
Chapman finally got on the board with 5:43 remaining in the third, but the game was solidly in the hands of ?Runners by that point and they easily cruised to the 11-point win.
Supporting Ortiz in the scoring column were Koudelkova, Becky Seelos and Jessica Kelley with two goals each. Jessica Manke, Katherine Gillett and Berry each chipped in one goal. Campbell had another solid performance in goal, recording 17 blocks, while Ortiz had five steals and Gillett contributed three assists.
Bakersfield heads to San Diego next weekend, taking on Princeton, University of the Pacific, Colorado State and San Diego State at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
