LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? A solid defensive effort by the CSUB women's water polo team resulted in an 8-3 win over Sonoma State in the Roadrunners' opening game at the Loyola Marymount Tournament Friday. The ?Runners (8-9 overall) finished with a split on the day, falling 11-6 to No. 15 nationally ranked UC San Diego.
Playing shutout defense in the first and fourth quarters against Sonoma State, the Roadrunners gave up just two goals in the second period and one in the third on their way to the five-point win.
Led by Amanda Ortiz's five goals, Bakersfield tallied a pair of points in each period. Jessica Manke, Katherine Gillett and Brittany Berry each added a goal while goalkeeper Veronica Campbell had 10 blocks.
Trailing by just two goals headed into the fourth quarter against UC San Diego, the ?Runners went cold on offense and were outscored 3-0 in the final period. The game was physical throughout as a trio of Tritons were hit with three ejections each while two ?Runners suffered the same fate.
Petra Koudelkova had three goals for CSUB, while Gillett, Ortiz and Becky Seelos each added one.
Bakersfield faces Santa Clara at 9:40 a.m. and Chapman at 1:10 p.m. Saturday to close out tournament play.
