BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. ? Junior Amanda Ortiz scored five of her game?high eight goals in the first half to lead the CSUB water polo team past Cal State Monterey Bay, 13?10, in a Western Water Polo Association match Thursday at the Hillman Aquatics Center in Bakersfield.
Ortiz scored three times in the first six minutes to help Bakersfield (8?8, 3?2 WWPA) forge a tenuous 4?3 lead after one quarter. She then teamed with Petra Koudelkova to score the first three goals of the second quarter as the Roadrunners built an 8?3 lead.
Trailing 11?6 entering the fourth quarter, CSUMB (8?6, 3?4), closed to within 12?10 on a Kellie Koorndyk penalty shot goal with 2:05 remaining. The Otters then forced a turnover on CSUB's next possession when 'Runner junior C.J. Longeuay made the biggest play of the game.
With her teammates sprinting back to defend, Longeuay deflected the pass back to the goalkeeper Jenna Beer and made the steal. Beer had little choice but to smother Longeuay to prevent the easy goal, earning an ejection that Longeuay turned into the clinching score two seconds later.
Beer played an outstanding game in goal for the Otters, making several spectacular stops as part of her nine blocks in the match. CSUB goalkeeper Veronica Campbell matched Beer's nine blocks in a winning effort.
CSUB returns to action Friday and Saturday when it heads to Los Angeles for the Loyola Marymount Tournament. The 'Runners open tournament play Friday with matches against WWPA rivals Sonoma State and UC San Diego.
