LOS ANGELES ? Despite 10 total goals by junior Amanda Ortiz, the CSUB women's water polo team fell 10-8 to CSU Northridge and 16-10 to Loyola Marymount Saturday in Los Angeles.
Ortiz, last week's Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week and the nation's leader in total goals scored (now 82), netted five goals in each game to lead the Roadrunner offense. She began the day by helping CSUB build a 6-5 lead entering the fourth period against Northridge.
The Matadors scored at the 7:24 mark to tie the game, but Petra Koudelkova put the ?Runners back up one just 30 seconds later with her first goal of the contest. Northridge struck again and Koudelkova responded for a second consecutive time, giving CSUB an 8-7 lead with 6:19 remaining. But the ?Runners would not score again in the match as the Matadors netted two more goals in the final minutes to claim the two-point win.
Becky Seelos chipped in one goal for Bakersfield while Veronica Campbell had nine blocks in goal.
In the nightcap game, CSUB and LMU traded goals during the first four minutes of the game, the final tie sitting at 4-4. From there, the Lions outscored the ?Runners 12-6 on their way to the 16-10 final.
Ortiz led Bakersfield with five goals while Koudelkova added three. Brittany Berry and C.J. Longeuay added one goal apiece while Katherine Gillett had two assists and two steals. Campbell, the national leader in blocks and blocks per game, had eight blocks to go along with a pair of steals.
The ?Runners travel to the UC Davis Tournament next Saturday and Sunday where they will take on four WWPA opponents in the round-robin tournament.
