EUGENE,
Ore. ? In just his third official match for the CSUB wrestling
team, Mitch Monteiro knocked off No. 1 seeded Nick Smith of Boise
State, advancing to the championship heavyweight match at the 2008
Pac-10 Championships, hosted by University of Oregon.
After
one day of competition, the Roadrunners sit in fifth place (out of 10
teams) with 77.5 points. Boise State leads the team standings with
128.0 points, followed by Arizona State in second (94.0), Oregon
State in third (83.5) and Cal Poly in fourth (79.0).
Monteiro
will be the lone ?Runner competing for an individual championship
Monday, while six wrestlers are still in the hunt for a possible
third place finish.
Monteiro,
who officially became eligible to compete for the ?Runners in
mid-February, earned the No. 5 seed in the 285 division. He opened
action Sunday with a 10-1 win over No. 4 seeded Kurk Klimek of Cal
State Fullerton. Facing off against Smith in the second round,
Monteiro earned an escape point to start the second period, and take
a 1-0 lead. Smith tied the score with an escape in the third period,
forcing the sudden death overtime period. With 26 seconds remaining
in OT, Monteiro scored a takedown to claim the 3-1 upset and advance
to the championship match against No. 2 Travis Gardner of Oregon
State.
At
125, No. 3 Brandon Zoetewey earned a 14-0 major decision over No. 6
Joey Lucas (Oregon), then fell 10-2 to No. 2 Anthony Robles (Arizona
State). Zoetewey will now take on No. 5 Micah Ferguson (Cal Poly)
with the winner advancing to the third place match.
Five
others sit in a similar situation after splitting their Saturday
matches. At 133, No. 6 Thomas Kimbrell upset No. 3 Todd Schavrien
(Arizona State), 6-5 in triple overtime, then dropped a tightly
contested 3-0 decision to No. 2 Cory Fish (Boise State). Kimbrell
will open action Monday against No. 5 Boris Novachkov (Cal Poly).
In
the 149 bracket, No. 4 seeded Jeremy Doyle trailed 3-0 early to No. 5
Eric Maldonado (Cal Poly), and despite a valiant attempt at a
comeback, fell 3-2. The CSUB senior bounced back, however, with a 3-0
decision over Arizona State's Orlando Jimenez and will now face No.
6 Lucas Espericueta (Stanford).
At
157, freshman Trevor Hall drew the No. 8 seed and a face off against
No. 1 Chase Pami (Cal Poly). Pami earned a fall at the 4:35 mark, but
Hall bounced back, pinning No. 5 Devan Velasquez (Cal State
Fullerton) just 43 seconds into the bout. Hall opens Sunday's
action against No. 2 Josh Zupancic (Stanford).
Daniel
Atondo, Bakersfield's lone returning national qualifier, earned the
No. 4 seed and went 3-1 Sunday. The 165-pound senior picked up a 10-1
major decision over Kyle Barrett (Stanford), an 18-3 technical fall
over Brady Garner (Portland State) and an injury default win over No.
8 Dustin Noack (UC Davis). One win away from the third place match,
Atondo faces No. 6 Keegan Davis (Oregon State) Monday.
The
final ?Runner still in the hunt for an automatic berth to the NCAA
National Championships is Riley Orozco at 197. The No. 5 seeded
redshirt freshman was shut out, 6-0, in his opening match against No.
4 Matt Casperson (Boise State), but came back to pin Cal Poly's
Collin Brooks at the 5:32 mark. Orozco opens action Monday against
No. 2 John Drake (Cal State Fullerton).
Elijah
Nacita and Jason Points, wrestling at 141 and 184, respectively, will
both compete in the seventh place match Monday while Daniel
Alejandro, wrestling up two weight classes, went 0-2, closing out his
senior season with a 12-8 record.
Consolation
semi-finals begin at 3 p.m. Monday at McArthur Court followed by
placement matches from 4:30-6 p.m. Championship finals and third and
fourth place matches begin at 7 p.m.
