Polo Beats Marist In Home Finale, 8-5

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. ? All good things must come to an end, and so it did for the the CSUB water polo team Wednesday. The Roadrunners closed the home portion of thier 2008 schedule with an 8?5 victory over Marist College Wednesday at the Hillman Aquatics Center.

CSUB (15?11 overall) finished the season 7?4 at home. The 'Runners won their final four matches and seven of the last eight at the Hillman Aquatics Center.

Bakersfield never trailed in the match, but it couldn't put the pesky Red Foxes away until Amanda Ortiz' score early in the final period gave the Roadrunners their first three?goal cushion.

Defense dominated Wednesday, and no player came up larger than CSUB junior goalkeeper Veronica Campbell, who made 16 saves to help the 'Runners maintain tenuous control throughout the match. Campbell made eight of her stops in the third period, helping Bakersfield protect a one?goal lead until C.J. Longeuay finished a pretty far-post cross from Jessica Manke with 28 seconds remaining to put the 'Runners up 7?5 heading to the fourth period.

Campbell and the defense pitched a shutout over the final eight minutes to put the match away.

Marist also gave a good defense effort, allowing just a pair of player?down goals and one penalty shot despite nine ejections through the bulk of the match. The Red Fox defense held the potent duo of Ortiz and Petra Koudelkova to just four combined goals.

Ortiz and Becky Seelos led all scorers with three goals apiece for CSUB. Campbell chipped in three of CSUB's seven assists.

Hilary Schroeder led Marist (14?6) with a pair of goals.

The 'Runners will take 10 days off before returning to action Mar. 29 at Loyola Marymount, where they will play matches against LMU and Cal State Northridge. Marist returns home to host Queens (NY) College on Mar. 29.
