BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. ? Despite playing most of the fourth period without leading scorer Amanda Oritz, the CSUB women's water polo team held off visiting Wagner University to earn a 12?8 win Tuesday at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
Ortiz scored four goals to help the Roadrunners (14?11 overall) open an 8?4 lead after three periods. But early in the fourth, Ortiz got popped in the nose and missed the balance of the match with a bloody nose.
The Roadrunner offense barely missed a beat, adding four more goals to expand their lead to 12?6. Wagner's (7?7) Billy Hoelck converted a pair of late penalty shots to get the Seahawks closer, but CSUB held on for the win.
The teams beat up the woodwork early in the match as both teams missed solid scoring chances when each squad hit the posts numerous times. CSUB goalkeeper Veronica Campbell and Wagner keeper Kristen Spector also made their share of big saves early as Wagner led 1?0 after one period.
The offense opened up in the second period as Bakersfield quickly took the lead. Petra Koudelkova scored from point?blank range to tie the score before Ortiz finished a penalty shot to give the Roadrunners their first lead.
Laura Vanderbent temporarily tied the score midway through the second period. The teams then combined to score three goals in the final 1:41 of the first half as CSUB took a 4?3 lead into the intermission.
The 'Runners scored the first two goals of the second half and Wagner never caught up again.
CSUB will play its final home match of the 2008 season when it hosts Marist University Wednesday at 3 p.m.
