STOCKTON, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team was red?hot in game one and ice?cold in game two while splitting a doubleheader at Big West Conference member University of the Pacific Sunday afternoon at Simoni Field in Stockton.
CSUB (12?12 overall) scored eight runs while matching its season?high of 14 hits in winning the opener 8?2. But UOP starter Alyce Jorgensen quieted the potent Roadrunner bats in game two, tossing a four?hit shutout as the Tigers earned the split with a 5?0 win.
Things started slowly for the 'Runners as Pacific (15?16) jumped out to a 2?0 lead after two innings in the opener. But the 'Runners quickly kicked it into gear, scoring in each of the next four innings to take control.
Senior catcher Hilary Taylor singled home the tying run in the fourth inning and added another RBI hit in the fifth. Sophomore shortstop Kristen Archuleta then capped a career?high four?RBI game by clearing the bases with a three?run double in the sixth.
Freshman pitcher Brittany Johnson also caught fire after the slow start, retiring 13 of 15 hitters after UOP scored its second run. She scattered three hits over the final five innings to pick up her eighth win of the season.
Sophomore Shawna Truan extended CSUB's pitching mastery of Pacific to eight innings before the Tigers finally broke their drought by scoring a pair of runs in the third inning of the nightcap. Jorgensen then led off the fourth inning with a double and came around to score as UOP pulled away from a trio of 'Runner pitchers.
Archuleta, Cara Klein and Kelli Bailey each had three hits in the doubleheader to lead the CSUB offense. Jorgensen and Casey Goldsand had three hits apiece for Pacific.
CSUB will continue its six?game tour of the Big West with a doubleheader at former NCAA Division II rival Cal State Northridge Saturday in Northridge.
