SAN
DIEGO ? The CSUB women's water polo team picked up its seventh
Western Water Polo Association win, and 13th overall with
a 9-6 victory over Colorado State at the San Diego State Aztec
Invitational Sunday. The Roadrunners later fell 13-7 to No. 6
nationally ranked San Diego State to close out the weekend's action.
Bakersfield
(13-11 overall, 7-3 WWPA) went up 3-1 early against Colorado State
before giving up two goals in the final minute of the first period.
The momentary lapse did not last, however, as the 'Runners cracked
down their defense, giving up just three goals in the final three
periods.
“That
was a good game,” said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. “Besides that
one minute stretch we played good defense and were solid on offense.
It was a good win over a conference opponent.”
Petra
Koudelkova and Amanda Ortiz had four goals each while also each
drawing four ejections. Becky Seelos added one goal, C.J. Longeuay
had three assists and goalkeeper Veronica Campbell tallied 13 blocks
in the win.
The
'Runners put up a fight against San Diego State, trailing just 5-4 at
the half. The No. 6 Aztecs then pulled away in the third period,
outscoring CSUB 4-0 to lead 9-4.
“We
played great in the first half, but made some critical mistakes in
the third quarter,” said Gall. “We regrouped in the fourth, but
good teams take advantage of every little mistake you make.”
Ortiz
led Bakersfield with three goals, Koudelkova added two, Katherine
Gillett had one and Jessica Kelly had one. Seelos added a pair of
assists in the match while Campbell recorded 10 blocks.
The
'Runners return home next week, hosting Wagner University on Tuesday
and Marist University on Wednesday. Both matches are scheduled for 3
p.m. at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
