SAN
DIEGO ? Four goals each by Petra Koudelkova and Amanda Ortiz helped
hold off a four quarter surge by University of the Pacific as the
CSUB women's water polo team earned an 11-9 win over the Tigers
Saturday at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
Earlier
in the day the Roadrunners, who are now 12-10 overall, fell 10-9 to
No. 20 nationally ranked Princeton.
In
the win over Pacific, Bakersfield built a 5-3 lead at the half and an
8-4 lead through three quarters of play. The Tigers' offense came to
life in the fourth quarter, however, as they put up five goals in the
eight-minute span. CSUB held on, score three goals of their own.
Koudelkova
and Ortiz provided the bulk of the scoring with their combined eight
goals, while Brittany Berry, Becky Seelos and C.J. Longeuay chipped
in one goal each. Veronica Campbell, currently the nation's leader in
saves per game, recorded nine blocks for CSUB.
In
the earlier loss, Princeton's Lauren Brunner broke a 9-9 tie by
netting the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining. The 'Runners
held the advantage early in the match, leading 3-1 in the first
quarter and 5-4 at the half. But led by Tigers' Helen Meigs who
tallied a game-high five goals, CSUB was outscored 6-4 in the second
half.
Ortiz
had four goals in the loss while Koudelkova added three scores.
Seelos and Longeuay also added one goal each while, Campbell had five
blocks and four steals in goal for the 'Runners.
Tournament
action concludes Sunday at the Aztec Aquaplex with the 'Runners
facing Western Water Polo Association rivals Colorado State at 9 a.m.
And San Diego State at 1:30 p.m.
