CSUB Splits On Day 1 Of Triton Invite

Women's Water Polo CSU Bakersfield Athletic Communications

Ortiz Tallies Seven Goals, 'Runners Split

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The CSUB women's water polo team bounced back from a frustrating loss Friday to earn a split in a pair of contests Saturday in La Jolla. The Roadrunners fell 7-5 in a tight match against No. 16 nationally ranked UC San Diego, then came back just two hours later to claim a 12-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer.

Amanda Ortiz had a pair of goals in the morning match against the Tritons, while Brittany Berry, Becky Seelos and Jessica Kelley each netted a goal. Ortiz and Petra Koudelkova also drew six ejections apiece, while Veronica Campbell and C.J. Longeuay had three steals each.

“We played well both on offense and defense,” said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. “We did miss a couple of opportunities, including a 5-meter penalty shot, and had a couple of counters that we should have scored on.”

In the game against Pomona-Pitzer, the No. 1 nationally-ranked NCAA DIII team, the ?Runners started hot, scoring four goals in each of the first two periods to take an 8-3 lead at the half.

Led by Ortiz's five goals, CSUB went on to tally four second-half goals while holding the Sagehens to just one goal.

“Our scoring percentage was higher this game and we took better advantage of our opportunities,” said Gall. “It was our second game of the day and we showed that conditioning-wise we're in good shape and able to execute at the end.”

Supporting Ortiz on the offensive end were Seelos with three goals, Koudelkova with two and Kelley and Jessica Manke with one each.
Campbell, who rejoined the team Saturday morning after competing for three days at the Conference USA women's swimming
Championships, had another stellar performance in goal. The junior had 21 blocks in the win.

“It made a huge difference (having Veronica Back) in goal and being able to put C.J. back in the field,” said Gall.

The ?Runners are home at the Hillman Aquatics Center for a Thursday match-up against Cal State Monterey Bay. CSUB then hits the road on Friday and Saturday for the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles.
