LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Four goals by junior Amanda Ortiz and a strong defensive effort by goalkeepers C.J. Longeuay and Veronica Campbell helped CSUB's women's water polo team to a 9-6 win over Brown University Saturday at the UCSD Triton Invitational. CSUB earned a split on the day, falling in its early game 11-7 to No. 14 nationally ranked Long Beach State.
“Against Long Beach we drew a lot of ejections, but we didn't take advantage of the six-on-five situations,” said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. “We did a much better job of than against Brown, and we had much better composure.”
In the win over Gall's former team, the ?Runners took an early 3-0 lead in the first period and, behind seven blocks each from Longeuay and Campbell, held on for the three-goal win. Joining Ortiz in the scoring column were sophomore Becky Seelos and junior Petra Koudelkova with two goals each, and freshman Jessica Kelley with one goal. Seelos also added three assists.
In the tournament opener against Long Beach State, the ?Runners went down 3-1 after the first period and then were outscored 4-1 in the second as the 49ers opened up the game. CSUB drew 15 ejections in the contest, and rallied for a four-goal fourth-period, but would still come up short.
Ortiz and Seelos each had a pair of goals in the game while Koudelkova, Jessica Manke and Brittany Berry had one goal apiece.
CSUB opens play Sunday at 11:45 a.m. against Indiana and then will play its final game at 3:45 p.m. or 5 p.m. depending on the morning outcome.
