BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? CSUB's women's water polo team claimed its first win of the 2008 season with a 17-1 victory over Fresno Pacific at the Roadrunner Mini Tournament Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Roadrunners fell 13-7 to No. 18 nationally ranked Cal State Northridge.

Freshman Jessica Kelley sparked the ?Runners big win over the Sunbirds, leading the attack with six goals, including three in the seven-goal fourth period.

Bakersfield went up 4-0 in the first period and took a 5-0 lead before Fresno Pacific scored its lone goal of the game 1:15 into the second period.

Joining Kelley in the scoring column for CSUB were Amanda Ortiz with four goals and Petra Koudelkova with three. Jessica Manke chipped in a pair of scores, while Becky Seelos and Veronica Campbell each tallied one.

Against Northridge, the ?Runners were down early, but scored three consecutive goals to tie the score 3-3 midway through the second period. The Matadors responded with another 3-0 run to close out the half.

CSUB began the third quarter with momentum as two goals by Seelos and one each by Ortiz and Koudelkova brought the score to 9-7 in favor of Northridge at the end of the period. But the Matadors netted four unanswered goals in the fourth to hold on for the 13-7 win.

CSUB heads to La Jolla next week to participate in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Feb. 9 and 10. The ?Runners open play against Long Beach State.
