RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? A solid first quarter of play did not hold through the ensuing three quarters as the CSUB women's water polo team fell 9-7 to Cal Baptist Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
The Roadrunners (6-7 overall) took a 1-0 lead after eight minutes of play, then led 3-1 midway through the second period before the Lancers tied the score 3-3 at the half.
With the score tied 6-6 after three periods of play, it was Cal Baptist that picked up its offense in the final period, outscoring the ?Runners 3-1 in the period to claim the win.
After going down a goal early in the final period, the ?Runners tied the score 7-7 on a five-meter penalty shot by Amanda Ortiz with 5:53 remaining. But the Lancers scored the final go-ahead goal just 30 seconds later and added an insurance score with 1:25 remaining.
“It was a frustrating game,” said CSUB Head Coach Jason Gall. “We had good intensity and started well with a shutout in the first quarter. We had a lot of opportunities (to score) as the game went on, but we just didn't put our shots away.”
Becky Seelos and Petra Koudelkova had two goals apiece for Bakersfield while Ortiz, Katherine Gillett and Jessica Kelley each added one goal.
C.J. Longeuay had 21 saves, two steals and one assist while playing all four quarters in goal for the ?Runners, who were without Longueay's fellow goalkeeper Veronica Campbell. Campbell is currently in Houston with the CSUB swim team, but will rejoin the water polo squad for Saturday's matches.
“C.J. had a good game in goal, but we did miss her presence in the field,” said Gall.
The ?Runners play a pair of games in La Jolla Saturday, first against UC San Diego at 10 a.m. followed by Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m.
