UP NEXT: The Roadrunner men's basketball team hits the road for the final time
this season, traveling to Orem, Utah on Saturday (Mar. 1) for a rematch
with fellow NCAA Division I Independent member Utah Valley University. The 'Runners will return home to host Big West Conference contender Cal State Fullerton Tuesday (Mar. 4) to close the 2007-08 season.
WOLVERINE NOTES (14-14 overall): Utah Valley could become 1 of only 2 NCAA Div. I Independent teams to finish over .500 this season with a win over CSUB...Jr. G Ryan Toolson, who lit up the 'runners for 32 points in the first meeting, leads all Indepen-dent scorers at 23.7 ppg...he also shoots 44 pct. (102-of-232) from three?point range ...Sr. F Jordan Brady is the only other Wolverine in double figures at 10.9 ppg.
SERIES HISTORY: UVU took the only previous meeting, overcoming a 36?35 halftime deficit to win 85?74 at Rabobank Arena on Jan. 19...Ryan Toolson led UVU with 32 points...Donavan Bragg had 17 to lead CSUB.
THIS DATE IN ROADRUNNER HISTORY: The 'Runners wrapped up the CCAA title with a 69?58 win at Cal State L.A. on Mar. 1, 1997. CSUB went on to win its third NCAA title later that month.
LIVING UP TO THEIR NAME: The ROADrunners will hit the road for the final time this season when they play at Utah Valley University Mar. 1. When the 'Runners finally arrive back in Bakersfield on mar. 2, they will have completed a total of 12,198 miles of travel this season, by far a school record.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME? Although traveling as an NCAA Division I Independent member has been a chore for the 'Runners, the difficulty hasn't been reflected in their record this season. CSUB is 4?9 in Rabobank Arena and 4?10 on the road in 2007?08.
LOOKING FOR THEIR FIRST INDEPENDENT WIN: The power centers of collegiate basketball are supposed to be its conferences, but for the 'Runners this season, Independent play as been the tougher row to hoe. CSUB is 0?3 versus Independent teams.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Roadrunners have been very generous this season when it comes to sharing the statistical glory. With just two games reamingin in 2007?08, eight different players have led the team in scoring while 11 different players have led the team in rebounding. See page six of this release for the detailed lists.
BALANCING ACT: Although junior swingman Terrence Johns is the only 'Runner averaging in double figures, Head Coach Keith Brown has not had a problem finding double?figure scorers this season. When Donald Lee (L.A. Pierce College) notched 14 points in the first meeting versus Utah Valley, he became the 10th 'Runner to reach that plateau in 2007?08.
...AND THE LITTLE ONES SHALL LEAD THEM: With an eye towards the future, the Roadrunners continue to play a rotation that leans heavily on their younger players. Freshmen and sophomores account for 70 of CSUB's 135 total starts this season and have played 2,847 of a possible 5,450 minutes this season (52 percent).
EVERYBODY GETS IN ON THE ACT: Although the 'Runners fell at Boise State last week, 10 of the 11 'Runners in uniform scored in the game. It equalled the most 'Runner players to have scored in a game since 11 'Runners scored in a 90?78 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Feb. 10, 2007.
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: Another thing that went right for the 'Runners at Boise was their ability to take care of the ball. CSUB turned the ball over a season?low seven times, the fourth game in which they turned it over fewer than 10 times this season.
FYI, the CSUB record for fewest turnovers in a game is six, set in a win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 25, 2006.
'RUNNERS VS. DI COMPETITION: Although 2007?08 is the first time the Roadrunners take on a full NCAA Division I schedule, it does not mark the first Bakersfield foray into NCAA Division I play. The 'Runners own an all?time mark of 25?63 in 88 games against 43 different Division I opponents. Note that this mark does not include games against current DI teams that were not DI when they met.
36 YEARS OF CSUB BASKETBALL: The 2007?2008 season marks the 37th anniversary of Roadrunner men's basketball at CSUB. Since the program's inception in 1971?72, the Roadrunners have posted an impressive all?time record of 738?325 (.694).
WHERE OTHERS HAVE GONE BEFORE: Making the leap from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I play is a big step. It's also a step taken by several Roadrunner rivals over the past few seasons. Bakersfield is the sixth West Region school to make the jump since 1990. The others are: Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, UC Davis and UC Riverside.
In fact, DII and the California Collegiate Athletic Association have been jumping off points for many of the current DI programs in the West. All nine Big West Conference members are former DII schools and all but UC Irvine were formerly in the CCAA. Other former DII and CCAA schools from the West include Fresno State, Pepperdine, San Diego State and San Jose State.
