UP NEXT: The Roadrunner men's basketball team (8-17 overall) hits the road again
for a big game at Western Athletic Conference frontrunner Boise State
Wednesday (Feb. 20). CSUB returns home to host UT-Pan American Friday in Rabobank Arena.
ON THE AIR: As always, you can follow all of the
action on the radio at KERN NewsTalk 1410 AM. Corey Costelloe will call
the play-by-play.
BRONCO NOTES (19-6 overall): Boise just took a half-game lead in the WAC race thanks to San Jose's upset of Utah State Monday night...the Broncos have won 7 of 8 entering Wednesday's game ...enter the game ranked No. 1 nationally in FG% at 51.6...they also rank No. 9 nationally in scoring (82.4 ppg) and assists (18.2 apg) ...Sr. F Reggie Larry leads Boise in scoring (19.2 ppg and rebounding (9.1 rpg).
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the first-ever meeting between CSUB and Boise State in men's basketball...Boise and CSUB belong to
the same conference ? in wrestling. Both are mem- bers of the Pac?10.
THIS WEEK IN ROADRUNNER HISTORY: CSUB clinched its first conference title ? in just its second-ever season ? with wins over Cal State Northridge and Cal State Fullerton in 1973.
FREQUENT FLIER MILES: The 'Runners got to enjoy all the comforts of home last week ? for all of one game. They returned from their five?game, 8,088?mile road trip to host (and defeat) Long Beach State Saturday night. They'll pad their frequent flier miles by taking to the air for two of their next three games, starting Wednesday at Boise State.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME? Although traveling as an NCAA Division I Independent member has been a chore for the 'Runners, the difficulty has been reflected in their record this season. CSUB is 4?8 in Rabobank Arena and 4?9 on the road in 2007?08.
'RUNNERS POST THIRD COME?FROM?BEHIND WIN: Saturday's win over Long Beach State marked the third time (in eight victories) this season the 'Runners have come from behind in the final five minutes to win. For the curious, the other come?from?behind wins this season came at Long Beach State (80?77 in overtime on Jan. 23) and versus South Dakota State (73?71 in overtime on Dec. 28).
SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Roadrunners have been very generous this season when it comes to sharing the statistical glory. Through the first 25 games of 2007?08, eight different players have led the team in scoring while nine different players have led the team in rebounding. See page six of this release for the detailed lists.
BALANCING ACT: Although junior swingman Terrence Johns is the only 'Runner averaging in double figures, Head Coach Keith Brown has not had a problem finding double?figure scorers this season. When Donald Lee (L.A. Pierce College) notched 14 points versus Utah Valley, he became the 10th 'Runner to reach that plateau in 2007?08.
...AND THE LITTLE ONES SHALL LEAD THEM: With an eye towards the future, the Roadrunners continue to play a rotation that leans heavily on their younger players. Freshmen and sophomores account for 63 of CSUB's 125 total starts this season and have played 2,642 of a possible 5,050 minutes this season (52 percent).
HEATING BACK UP: The 'Runners may be headed to the fridged Pacific Northwest, but it looks as if their shooting may be heating back up just in time. After shooting less than 40 percent in each of their previous four games (an aggregate 34.6 percent in that span), the 'Runners shot 46.2 percent in Saturday's win over Long Beach State. It also marked their highest shooting percentage in Rabobank Arena since they converted a season?high 60 percent (36-of-60) in 98?64 win over Loyola Marymount on Jan. 7.
WHERE OTHERS HAVE GONE BEFORE: Making the leap from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I play is a big step. It's also a step taken by several Roadrunner rivals over the past few seasons. Bakersfield is the sixth West Region school to make the jump since 1990. The others are: Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, UC Davis and UC Riverside.
In fact, DII and the California Collegiate Athletic Association have been jumping off points for many of the current DI programs in the West. All nine Big West Conference members are former DII schools and all but UC Irvine were formerly in the CCAA. Other former DII and CCAA schools from the West include Fresno State, Pepperdine, San Diego State and San Jose State.
'RUNNERS VS. DI COMPETITION: Although 2007?08 is the first time the Roadrunners take on a full NCAA Division I schedule, it does not mark the first Bakersfield foray into NCAA Division I play. The 'Runners own an all?time mark of 25?61 in 86 games against 42 different Division I opponents. Note that this mark does not include games against current DI teams that were not DI when they met.
36 YEARS OF CSUB BASKETBALL: The 2007?2008 season marks the 37th anniversary of Roadrunner men's basketball at CSUB. Since the program's inception in 1971?72, the Roadrunners have posted an impressive all?time record of 738?323 (.696).
