VEGAS, Nev. ? The CSUB softball team maintained its winning record by
closing play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic with a 5-0 win over Bradley
University Sunday Morning at Craig Park in Las Vegas.
The Roadrunners
also played an exhibition game against the Canadian National Team Sunday,
falling 5-3.
Freshman pitcher Brittany
Johnson
threw a six-hitter for her first collegiate shutout against Bradley, while the
Roadrunner offense went from little ball to long ball to provide her ample
support.
Senior outfielder
Bethany Snow
rapped a pair of home runs for the first two-home run game of her collegiate
career. Freshman outfielder Stefanie Frei made the most of her first
collegiate start by hitting her first collegiate home run in the fourth inning.
Sunday's win
helped take the sting out of a pair of Saturday losses in which the 'Runner
defense made 11 errors to cost the team a pair of close games. The 'Runners
made seven errors in a 6-5, eight-inning loss to Portland State. The errors
spoiled another dramatic late rally in which CSUB scored twice in the bottom of
the seventh to force extra innings.
CSUB made four
more errors as it missed a chance to upset No. 23 UNLV in an 8-5 loss. The
'Runners led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before the Rebels
put a five spot on the board. Bakersfield got runners to second and third with
one out in the sixth, but couldn't push any runs across and UNLV held on to
win.
CSUB will stay on
the road to play at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational Feb. 22-24.
