SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.
- The CSUB women's basketball team fell to the University of Idaho Vandals, 75-62,
Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo
Holiday Beach Classic. The Roadrunners record now stands at 3-2 while the
Vandals improve to 2-4.
Senior Kelley Tarver led the ?Runners in scoring for the
second-consecutive contest with 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Classmate
Christine Kepenekian had 16 points and nine rebounds. Morgan Saso had 14 points
and grabbed six rebounds in 20 minutes of work.
Coming off the bench early in the first half, Saso came
provided the ?Runners with an immediate spark. On back-to-back possessions Saso
backed down her defender in the land and followed her own shot for a quick two.
The next time down the floor she found a driving Phynique Allen for an easy layup.
CSUB spent much of the first half trying to execute its
offense against the Idaho 2-3
zone. While the ?Runner guards were able to penetrate, the shots just were not
falling as CSUB was 12-for-34 (.353) from the field and 2-for-10 (.200) from
behind the arc. Kepenekian hit both threes for the ?Runners and led all scorers
at the half with 12. Tarver had eight points, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw
line and converting on a couple aggressive drives to the bucket for easy
layups. Saso had six points, four rebounds and two blocks. Idaho
took a one-point lead into the halftime break, 31-30.
Idaho extended
the lead to seven midway through the second half, 51-44, as Yinka Olorunnife
hit a couple of big three point buckets for the Vandals.
Down by 12 with five and a half minutes to go, CSUB found
Saso underneath for a quick bucket and it looked as though Kepenekian had forced a quick steal in the backcourt on the inbounds but was whistled for an
offensive foul.
Idaho held the
lead in the game for the final 11:59
of the contest, extending its advantage to 15 with 3:25 remaining. The Vandals shot 42.4 percent from the
field to CSUB's season low of 37.5 percent. Idaho
outrebounded the ?Runners, 43-38, and forced CSUB into 17 turnovers.
Kelley Tarver was named to the all-tournament team,
averaging 23.5 points over the weekend.
The ?Runners will take a two-day rest before heading to Los
Angeles for a Wednesday showdown with Pac-10 member UCLA at 7 p.m. This will be
the first meeting between the two programs.
