NORTHRIDGE, Calif.
- The CSUB women completed the weekend basketball sweep of the Cal State
Northridge Matadors winning 74-59 in Northridge, Calif., on Saturday afternoon,
one day after the men's team defeated CSUN 67-65 at Rabobank Arena. The ?Runners
improve to 1-1 with the victory while Northridge drops to 0-4.
Senior Christine Kepenekian, fresh off her 26-point effort
in the opener against Fresno State, remained hot for the ?Runners as she
knocked down a trio of three pointers from well behind the extended men's
three-point arc in the first half. She also pulled down three offensive
rebounds and blocked a shot on a drive by Northridge's Kayla Rutherford. She
finished the opening frame with 12 points to lead all scorers at the break.
Early foul troubles shortened the Roadrunner bench early in
the first half as senior Morgan Saso, freshman Jana Smith and junior Phynique
Allen were each whistled for two fouls less than six minutes into the contest.
A total of 26 fouls were called in the first half resulting in a combined 28
free throw attempts.
The Roadrunner defense forced 13 first-half Northridge
turnovers including four steals by senior guard Krista Arase.
CSUB went on a 15-4 run late in the half and led by as many
as 11 after trailing by five twice in the opening frame. The Matadors would
make a late charge to close the halftime gap to eight, 35-27.
Early in the second half, turnovers plagued the Roadrunners
as they lost the ball on four of their first six possessions. Smith again was
whistled for two quick fouls and had to sit less than three minutes into the
second frame after grabbing two rebounds, giving her four for the contest in
almost as many minutes played. Northridge seized the momentum and went on a
10-2 run.
With the score tied at 37-37, the ?Runners found their legs
as CSUB ran off nine straight points in less than a 90 seconds. Saso set a
screen that freed up a driving Tarver who gave the lead back to the Roadrunners.
On the next possession, Arase knocked down a three followed by quick scores by
junior Katie Williams and Saso. After a Northridge basket, Arase knocked down another
three, giving CSUB a 10-point advantage.
The ?Runners would not let the lead dip back underneath 10
as they pulled away from the Matadors late in the contest. With Smith and Saso
in foul trouble, sophomores Shawnee Carter and Nikki Leon provided CSUB with
valuable minutes down the stretch.
Kepenekian and Arase each finished with game-highs of 16 to
lead CSUB. Kepenekian's minutes were down in the second half after receiving a
cut underneath her right eye. She still grabbed a team-best eight rebounds,
half coming on the offensive glass. Arase was 4-5 from behind the arc. Tarver
added 15 points for the ?Runners while Allen had 10 after sitting most of the
first half.
Katie Williams played 25 minutes and provided the ?Runners a
strong backcourt option after classmate Tiffany Belt left the game in the first
half. The Reedley College
transfer had seven points and five rebounds. She also chipped in two steals and
dished out an assist.
CSUB shot 41.1 percent from the floor but held the Matadors
to 32.8 percent and forced 22 turnovers. Arase had five steals while Allen
contributed four. The ?Runners were outrebounded, 48-39.
The Roadrunners travel to Irvine,
Calif., to take on the Anteaters of UC
Irvine on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but has been moved forward to 5 p.m.
