 THIS WEEK IN ROADRUNNER HISTORY
The 'Runners defeated Fresno State, 65?64, on Nov. 17, 2007 for their first home NCAA Division I victory.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS: CSUB is 32?5 (.864) all?time in home openers dating back to its inaugural campaign of 1971?72. In home openers were not season openers (such as Friday's date with Northridge), the 'Runners are 21?3 (.875).

FOR (HOME) OPENERS, PART II: The 'Runners have enjoyed tremendous success in home openers at Rabobank Arena. Since moving to the venue for the 1998?99 season, CSUB is 9?1 in openers there. The 'Runners have won seven consecutive home openers in the building.

THE LAST TIME WE MET: Northridge shot a lights?out 64 percent (34-of-62) in a 92?76 win at the Matadome on Nov. 21, 2007. CSUB's Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College) exploded for a game?high 25 points. It wasn't enough, however, to slow a Matador attack that featured six double?figure scorers.

'RUNNERS vs. DI COMPETITION: Although 2008?09 will be just the second time the Roadrunners take on a full NCAA Division I schedule, Bakersfield already has a bit of history in NCAA Division I play. The 'Runners own an all?time mark of 25?68 in 93 games against 42 different Division I opponents. Note that this mark does not include games against current DI teams that were not DI when they met CSUB.

WE MEET AGAIN: The 'Runners may be relative new kids on the block at the NCAA Division I level, but they possess a wealth of experience against the Division I opponents they will meet this season. CSUB owns an aggregate 149?114 all?time record against this season's opposition. Note that most of those results came when both CSUB and its opposition were competing at the Division II level.

BOMBS AWAY: Junior guard Patrick Carlson (Reno, Nev./Lassen College) became CSUB's first 20?point scorer this season when he nailed five three?pointers as part of a 21?point effort at Air Force.

LATUNDE DOUBLES UP: Junior forward Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County CC) didn't match Carlson's point production, but he did post CSUB's first double?double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards at Air Force.

YOU CAN'T TELL THE PLAYERS WITHOUT A SCORECARD: 'Runner fans will certainly need a scorecard to follow the action in the early going. Five players made their CSUB & collegiate debuts at Wyoming (Patrick Carlson, Justin Dennis, Bryan Emanuel, Jose Lara and Jonathan Machado). In addition, CSUB welcomed back junior forward Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County College) who played for the first time since injuring his shoulder again Oregon State on Dec. 11, 2007.

EVERYBODY IN: Head Coach Keith Brown used all 13 Roadrunners in uniform in both of CSUB's first two games. It was the first time CSUB played as many as 13 players since an 80?58 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 22, 2005. It was the first time that the 'Runners have played as many as 13 players in consecutive games since Brown joined the CSUB staff as an assistant coach in 1997?98.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: Of course, last week's liberal use of his bench came as little surprise, given the way Keith Brown coached teams share the wealth. Last season, the Roadrunners were very generous when it came to sharing the statistical glory. Eight different players led the team in scoring last season while 12 different players led the team in rebounding.

BALANCING ACT: Although junior swingman Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College) was the only 'Runner to average in double figures, Head Coach Keith Brown did not had a problem finding double?figure scorers last season. Ten different 'Runners scored in double figures during the 2007?08 season.

37 YEARS OF CSUB BASKETBALL: The 2008?2009 season will mark the 38th anniversary of Roadrunner men's basketball at CSUB. Since the program's inception in 1971?72, the Roadrunners have posted an impressive all?time record of 737?328 (.692).

WHERE OTHERS HAVE GONE BEFORE: Making the leap from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I play is a big step. It's also a step taken by several Roadrunner rivals over the past few seasons. Bakersfield is the sixth West Region school to make the jump since 1990. The others are: Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, UC Davis and UC Riverside.

In fact, DII and the California Collegiate Athletic Association have been jumping off points for many of the current DI programs in the West. All nine Big West Conference members are former DII schools and all but UC Irvine were formerly in the CCAA. Other former DII  and CCAA schools from the West include Fresno State, Pepperdine, San Diego State and San Jose State.
