Second?Half Spark Lifts ?Runners to Victory Over Utah Valley, 3?1

OREM, Utah -
Three second?half goals sparked the CSUB women's soccer team to a 3?1 victory Thursday afternoon over Utah Valley. Seniors Michelle Martinez, Alexa Vickroy and freshman Kristina Martin Del Campo all tallied goals for the ?Runners as the team matched it's largest offensive output of the season.

The other three?goal performance by CSUB this season came in the only other road victory of the season at Eastern Washington, 3?2, back on Sept. 5. The win moves the Roadrunner record to 5?11?1 while the Wolverines drop to 9?5?1.

An errant deflection off a crossing attempt by Utah Valley in the first half led to an own goal by the Roadrunners in the 17th minute of play. CSUB would bounce back after halftime with a goal less than three minutes in as Martin Del Campo scored her second goal of the season on a pass from Vickroy. In the 56th minute, freshman Veronica Ramos passed the ball over to Vickroy who floated a shot that went over the defense and Utah Valley keeper Mallory Schott to give the ?Runners the lead, 2?1.

Martinez added the insurance marker in the 75th minute as she pressured the back defensive line of the Wolverines and deflected a kick from Schott that bounced into the goal. The strike was Martinez's third of the season while the assist and goal by Vickroy were her first of the season.

Freshman Marina Constantinou finished with five saves while Schott had four saves for Utah Valley. The Wolverines had a 19?13 shot advantage during the match, but CSUB held a 7?6 edge in shots on goal.

“I thought our seniors played very well,” Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “(Senior Jackie) Torvestad, Vickroy and Martinez all had exceptional games. Defensively, (sophomore Alexandria) Ngo did a great job in the midfield. Our goal was to finish our last three games on a high note so today was a good start. I think we got the most out of today, being able to pick up a win playing at a higher altitude. It is always a positive when our forwards are scoring goals.”

CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field for Senior Day on Oct. 26 against the University of the Pacific at 3 p.m.
