BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Senior forward Demarcus Hall's (Richmond/College of the Sequoias) career night led to a watershed victory for the CSUB men's basketball team as the Roadrunners stormed past Loyola Marymount University 98?64 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Hall posted career highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds to help the 'Runners (4-12 overall) post their most points and largest margin of victory since beginning their move to the NCAA Division I level last season. CSUB shot 60 percent from the floor on 36-of-60 shooting and 69.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc, making 9-of 13 attempts. The 'Runners also out?rebounded LMU 42?26. All of those numbers set high water marks for Bakersfield as a Division I program.
Although Hall had a big game, it was junior swingman Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College) who led the early surge. Johns scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half as the 'Runners needed slightly more than four minutes to turn an 8?6 lead into a 22?7 advantage that would not be challenged.
A layup by Hall and two long jumpers by Johns?one a three-pointer?got the 'Runners rolling. That sequence kicked started runs of 14?1 and 21?3 that got the Bakersfield lead to 20 points for the first time at 29?9. LMU never got closer than 18 points for the balance of the first half.
Senior guard Zack Grasmick made a running jumper and followed that with three free throws on Bakersfield's final two possessions of the first half to get the lead to 30 points (56?26) at intermission. The Lions never got closer than 25 points in the second half.
In addition Hall and Johns, Trent Blakley (Alta Loma HS) scored in double figures for the fifth time in the last six games, finishing with 12 points. Grasmick chipped in 10. Freshman guard Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serra HS), filling in at the point for the injured Alex Johnson, passed for a career?high eight assists.
Freshman Orlando Johnson led LMU (3?13) with 14 points. Freshman guard Brandon Walker came off the bench to add 11 points.
CSUB returns to action Wednesday when it heads south to face the University of San Diego for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
