THIS WEEK: The Roadrunners are home in the Icardo Center for the first time this season, hosting Embry-Riddle University in a dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. With four tournaments under their belts, the ?Runners look to open start of the dual-meet part of the season on a positive note against the perennial NAIA national powerhouse Eagles. On Sunday, Jan. 6, CSUB travels to Atherton, Calif., to take part in the Menlo Invitational, hosted by Menlo College. Ten teams from up and down the West Coast will participate in the invitational, which is in its sixth year of existence.
LAST WEEK: The Roadrunners' Trevor Hall and Jeremy Doyle both earned placewinner status at the 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C., to highlight CSUB's 14th place team finish at the tournament. Hall, a 157 freshman, placed sixth after going 4-3 during the two-day event while Doyle, a 149 senior, finished eighth with a 5-3 record. In addition, junior Garth Wara (197) and senior Ryan Bergman (285) were both one match away from competing for a top eight finish.
FRESHMAN GROWTH: Freshman Trevor Hall has made giant strides over the first two months of his collegiate career. After opening his rookie campaign with a 5-2 record at the Menlo and Fullerton Opens, Hall was bounced from the Las Vegas Invitational in two matches. Since then, the 157-pound freshman from Battle Ground, Wash., has placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions and sixth at the Southern Scuffle. He is tied for the teams' second most wins (13) while also pinning four opponents.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP: After wrestling behind brother Brandon Doyle for three years, senior Jeremy Doyle (149) has stepped up during his final season as a Roadrunner. The Ramona, Calif., native placed third at the Fullerton Open, sixth at the Reno Tournament of Champions and eighth at the Southern Scuffle and currently holds the team's most individual wins (18).
SEEKING CONSISTENCY: While some ?Runners have shown the coaching staff consistent growth and achievement through the first two months of the season, the CSUB coaches are looking for those performances in every division. After earning fourth and sixth place finishes at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Elijah Nacita (141) and Daniel Atondo (165), went down early at the Southern Scuffle. Those two, along with Riley Orozco (184) will look to bounce back this week while no consistent starter has been determined for the 125, 133 and 174 divisions.
PIN FOR A WIN: Through 318 matches the Roadrunners have earned 48 of their 180 wins by virtue of a pin. Leading the way in that statistical category are freshman Trevor Hall (157) and seniors Jeremy Doyle (149) and Ryan Bergman (285), each with four pins. However, the ?Runners fastest pin to date (23 seconds) came by the hands of freshman Justin Durham (125). Currently the 2007-08 squad is well ahead of last year's team which posted 61 victories (of 303 total wins) by pin in 518 total matches.
KERR NEARING 400 CAREER WINS: Head Coach T.J. Kerr enters the 2007-08 season with a 35-year career record of 395-197-7. With a dozen dual meets on the this season's schedule, Kerr needs wins in just five of those to reach 400 career victories. Now in his 24th season at the helm of the Roadrunner program, Kerr also owns a 213-127-4 record at CSUB.
UP NEXT: The Roadunners open Pac-10 dual action on Jan. 12 in the Icardo Center, hosting both Boise State and Arizona State. The head-to-head with Boise State begins at 2 p.m. while the ?Runners match-up against Arizona State starts at 5 p.m.
