BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – There was no shortage of heroes for the Cal State Bakersfield softball team Friday as the Roadrunners opened a four–game series against Cal State Monterey Bay by sweeping a doubleheader, 3–2 and 9–1, at the Roadrunner Softball Complex in Bakersfield.
Senior leftfielder Carrie Hilvers (Bakersfield Christian HS) swung the biggest bat, belting a two–run homer in the first game and an RBI double to kick start a five–run first inning in game two. Junior rightfielder Pikake Nutter–Gaudet (Taft College) added a double in game one and another double and triple in the nightcap.
Monterey Bay (17–32, 4–22 CCAA) got a solid pitching effort from Jessica Boyle in the first game. When third baseman Ashlee Trotter drove in one third–inning run with a single and centerfielder Megan Russo added a second run with a sac fly, it appeared that Boyle was well on her way to her 13th win.
But the 'Runners took advantage of an error by second baseman Erica Wacker with two outs in the bottom of the third to put Boyle in jeopardy. Hilvers cashed in on the miscue when she drilled Boyle's only mistake over the leftfielder fence for her third home run of the season, tying the game at 2–2.
It stayed that way until the seventh, when the 'Runners put runners on second and third with nobody out. Boyle coaxed one ground ball that forced an out at the plate. But Hilvers followed with a short flyball that leftfieder Megan Luna tracked down but threw away, allowing the winning run to score.
Monterey Bay used two singles, a sacrifice and a passed ball to jump to a 1–0 lead in the first inning of the second game. But Boyle, who already had thrown a league–leading 245 innings this season, couldn't get out of the bottom of the first. Hilvers' RBI double opened the floodgates and Nutter–Gaudet's RBI triple put the 'Runners up 5–1.
Bakersfield added a pair of runs in the fifth inning before Nutter–Gaudet ended the game via run rule with a two–out, two–run double in the sixth inning.
The freshman pitching duo of Shawna Truan (McArthur/Fall River HS) and Katie Chavez (Fresno/Edison HS) benefited from the ample offensive support. They combined to allow just six hits and one unearned run as Truan improved to 5–8 on the season.
Bakersfield and Monterey Bay will concluded their four–game season series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
