Coyote Bats Spoil Home Finale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The Cal State San Bernardino softball team came into Sunday's doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield ice cold, but the Coyote bats turned red hot Sunday, pounding out 27 hits to lead San Bernardino to a 5?3, 12?4 doubleheader sweep of the Roadrunners at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

San Bernardino (24?26?0, 15?17 CCAA), had lost 13 of 15 entering Sunday's doubleheader, but the Coyotes were able to put that streak behind them in what was likely their final trip to Bakersfield.

The duo of shortstop Krista Hernandez and Crystal Fraijo did the most damage, combining to go 11-for-17 with four doubles and one home run. They also combined to score seven runs while driving in 11; Fraijo had six RBI in game two alone.

Designated player Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS) was the offensive star for the Roadrunners, finishing the doubleheader 3-for-7 with a double and the sixth homerun of her freshman season, but it wasn't enough on this day.

Bailey appeared to make a winner of senior Kristyn Daniels (West Torrance HS), who made her final home start in the opener. She hit a towering three?run homer to left centerfield to put the Roadrunners up 3?1 in the fourth inning.

But San Bernardino scratched its way back into the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Coyotes then completed the comeback on an odd play in the seventh. After Hernandez laced a one?out single up the middle, Fraijo hit a high fly ball to left field. Pikake Nutter?Gaudet raced under it and seemingly robbed Fraijo of a homerun only to have the ball pop out of her glove as she made contact with the fence.

Bakersfield race to a 3?0 lead in the first two innings of game two with Pikake Nutter?Gaudet's (Taft College) two?run double in the second the big blow. When freshman pitcher Katie Chavez (Fresno/Edison HS) extended her scoreless innings streak to 12 through the first three frames, the 'Runners were headed for a split.

Chavez couldn't keep the San Bernardino bats quiet forever, however, and the Coyotes exploded for 12 runs over the final four innings to put the game away.

Bakersfield (28?23?1, 20?16 CCAA) put the wraps on its final CCAA campaign with Sunday's doubleheader. The 'Runners will concluded the season next week at the NCAA Division I Independent Championship in Kennesaw, Ga.

San Bernardino kept its CCAA tournament hopes alive with Sunday's split. The Coyotes will play at Cal Baptist Thursday before concluding the regular season at home with a four?game set against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
