FRESNO, Calif. — Cal State Bakersfield senior Nick Umholtz turned in a season-best throw to win the hammer throw competition at the Fresno Four Way on Saturday.
The Bakersfield senior threw a season-best 197-8 to pick up his first hammer throw competition win of the season. Umholtz's win was the lone win of the day for the Roadrunners in the competition against NCAA Division I Fresno State and California JC powerhouses Mt. San Antonio College and Sacramento City College.
Fresno State won the women's competition with 229 points, followed by Mt. SAC with 173, Sacramento CC with 115 and Bakersfield with 79. In the men's competition, Fresno State won with 228 points, with Sacramento CC edging Mt. SAC for second 164-163, and Bakersfield placing fourth at 66.
In other men's competition, Ryan Lucker placed fifth in the both the 1,500 meters (4:09.66) and the 5,000 meters (16:31.88).
On the women's side, Alicia Diaz made her first appearance of the track and field season and was impressive in a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters at 4:59.20. Teammate Alyssa Lewis was sixth in the same event at 5:04.21.
Katina Fruguglietti turned in strong performances in the throwing competitions despite being just a freshman. She was second in the discus at 134-3 and third in the hammer throw at 158-3.
In the high jump, a pair of Roadrunners tied for second with Peace Nwosu and Grace McClellan each jumping 5-4 1/4. Valerie Taylor was third in the 400 meters in 61.30, and Bethany Lopez was fifth in the 800 meters in 2:27.33.
Bakersfield returns to Fresno next Friday and Saturday for the Cal-Nevada Championships.
