BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB men's basketball team continued to struggle shooting and it cost the Roadrunners dearly in an 80?69 exhibition loss to preseason NCAA Division II No. 10 Alaska Anchorage Saturday afternoon at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Bakersfield opened the game 3-for15 from the field. Trailing by 13 at 25?12 midway through the first half, they found enough rhythm to pull to within 31?29 at the break. But the Roadrunner missed their final two field goal attempts with a chance to tie or take the lead at the end of the first half and their first four to start the second half.
With CSUB cold again, it took Alaska just six minutes to build a double?digit lead it would not relinquish.
Both teams had plenty of open looks, but the Seawolves did a much better job converting their chances. They shot 54 percent in the first half (13-of-24) and a sizzling 68 percent (23-of-34) in the second half. CSUB, by comparison, shot 33 percent (23-of-70) for the game.
Senior forward Carl Arts did the bulk of the damage for UAA, finishing with 26 points and eight rebounds. Senior big man McCade Olsen added 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, mostly from point?blank range.
Sophomore forward Trent Blakley (Alta Loma, Calif.) hit three second?half three?pointers as he scored 12 of his team?leading 15 points after intermission. He also grabbed a game?high nine rebounds. Junior guard Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College) added 10 points and five assists.
CSUB will kick off its first full season of NCAA Division I competition when it travels to Cal State Fullerton Friday night. UAA concludes its California exhibition trip at the University of the Pacific Sunday.
