Weber State Outlasts 'Runners, 61-56

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Weber State shot 57 percent from the field Monday night and rode that hot?shooting effort to a 61?56 men's basketball victory over CSUB at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield dropped to 1-3 with Monday's loss. Weber State, a 22?win, NCAA Tournament participant last season, evened its record at 2-2 with the win.

Out?lasted might have been a better word than won to describe the outcome for Weber, as both teams played a patient style reflected in the final score. The Roadrunners and Wildcats both held brief seven?point leads ? CSUB late in the first half and Weber with 5:13 to play in regulation ? but the game stayed within a one or two possession lead for one team or the other for the balance of the contest.

Senior center Arturas Valeika led the Wildcats with his fourth double?double in as many games this season, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Steve Panos nearly missed his first double?double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Junior swingman Terrence Johns (Bakersfield College) led CSUB with 11 points and three steals. Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md.) and Zack Grasmick (Strathmore/Granite Hills HS) added 10 points apiece.

The difference in the game for the Roadrunners was early foul trouble for Latunde and freshman forward Cory Brown (Lakeside/El Capitan HS). With that duo combining to play just 11 minutes in the first half, CSUB was forced to play a perimeter game.

Thirty-one of Bakersfield's 55 field goal attempts came from beyond the arc. But Johns and Grasmick, normally sharp shooters from long range, made just 5-of-22 three-point attempts as CSUB shot 26 percent from downtown and 38 percent (21-of-55) overall.

Despite the cold shooting, the Roadrunner defense was hot enough to give Bakersfield a chance to win. CSUB forced 18 first-half turnovers and 24 for the game. But the Wildcats mitigated that advantage by out?rebounding Bakersfield 32?22.

CSUB will play its third game in five days when it travels over the hill to meet Big West Conference foe Cal State Northridge Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
