POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona scored a pair of second-half goals on long throw ins to overcome a first-half deficit and defeat Bakersfield 2-1 at Kellogg Field on Friday.

The goals were the first that Cal Poly Pomona had scored on Bakersfield in four matches dating back to the 2003 season and both goals were important ones as they gave the Broncos their first win over Bakersfield since 1998.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a strong start with Lyle Martin scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season on an assist from Towa Manda, whose fourth assist of the season also leads the team. Manda sent in a perfect through ball to Martin who got behind the Bronco defense and found himself alone with Pomona goalkeeper Thomas Ryan and had little problems slipping the ball past Ryan for the 1-0 lead.

Bakersfield led 1-0 at the half, but Pomona found a way to thwart the Roadrunner defense in the second half. Garrett Petry's long throw-ins allowed the Broncos to score twice in the second half and earn the win.

The first goal came just after the half in the 49th minute when his long throw in found Wayne Kao who flicked the ball with his head into the upper corner to level the score. In the 67th minute, Petry found Tadd Dolfo who headed the ball in the for the eventual game-winner.

Bakersfield used a pair of goalkeepers on Friday with Steve Merriweather making two saves in his first career start, and Steve Trojanowski playing the second half making three saves but also allowing both goals. Ryan made four saves for the Broncos in the win.

The Roadrunners will complete their longest road trip of the season on Sunday when they take on Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m. in the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader.
