Complete Meet Results

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Bakersfield junior Cecilia Barnes stole the show Saturday at the 2005 CCAA Track and Field Championships at University Field in Chico, breaking a long–standing NCAA Division II record in the discus throw with her toss of 191–10.

Barnes, the defending CCAA and NCAA II champion in the event, narrowly beat the old mark of 189–9 set by Janet Hill of Cal State LA in 1993. The toss also eclipsed Hill's old CCAA meet record of 172–6 set in 1993. With her record–breaking toss and second place finishes in the hammer (180–0) and the shotput (46–3), Barnes was named the 2005 CCAA Women's Athlete of the Year.

Chris Figures was named the 2005 CCAA Men’s Athlete of the Year after being the only triple winner in his final conference meet. Figures, who also won the conference honor in 2003, picked up wins in the shot put and the discus on Saturday to add to his hammer win on Friday. The senior easily cruised to a win in the discus with a toss of 166–1 and established a new CCAA meet record with a throw of 62–11 1/4 in the shot put.

Fellow Roadrunner and senior April Burton closed out her final conference meet by winning the shot put for the fourth time and placing second in the discus. Burton, who defended her hammer title with a win on Friday, won the shot put with a CCAA meet record mark of 52–2 and recorded a personal best of 178–9 while finishing second to Barnes’ record mark in the discus.

Overall, the CSUB women placed fifth with 93.5 team points and the men took sixth with 85.5. Host Chico State defended its men’s title with a convincing 210 points. UC San Diego won its first ever CCAA women’s title by edging out Chico 199.5 to 198.

The majority of the men’s points came in the weight events. Figures walked away with the two event wins today, but the Roadrunners had three athletes in the top four of both. Senior Van Mounts placed second in the shot put with a toss of 59–8 3/4 and junior Ian Banez took fourth at 53–4. Banez was also fourth in the discus at 157–2 with Junior Leo Chavez finished second with a mark of 159–5.

Freshman Peace Nwosu took second place in the high jump, clearing 5–3 3/4 and edging out a field full of upperclassman. Senior Wendi Plott also had a strong showing, finishing fifth in the 800 meter run.

The Cal State Bakersfield track and field team now begins final preparations for the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Abilene, Texas, May 26–28.
