Rice's Heroics Lead Roadrunners Past UCSD

December 2, 2005

BOX SCORE

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Junior guard Dwuan Rice made his only field goal of the second half a big one, nailing a pull–up, 15–foot jumper with four-tenths of a second left to lift Cal State Bakersfield to a 51–49 win over UC San Diego Friday night in Rabobank Arena.

Rice scored 13 of his game–high 15 points in the first half, but he saved his biggest shot for last. From the top of the key, he used a cross over dribble to beat his man to the left elbow then hit the bottom of the net with the game–winner. UCSD had a few precious tenths of a second to try for a miracle, but Randall Harding intercepted the inbounds attempt to seal the win for the Roadrunners.

Bakersfield (2–0, 1–0 CCAA) appeared poised to run away with the game several times, but UCSD (1–3, 0–1) spread the floor, ran the clock down, then made just enough shots to keep things close until the final horn.

Neither team shot as well as 40 percent from the field, but the Tritons made shots when they counted late, erasing a 12–point, 41–29 deficit over the final nine minutes. UCSD eventually tied the game at 49–49 on a Henry Patterson layup with 1:09 to play.

Both teams had a possession to take the lead, but neither team had a good shot until Rice’s game–winner.

The Roadrunners, who lit up Cal State East bay for 114 points in their opener, gave a typically solid defensive. Bakersfield finished among the national leaders by allowing just 66.4 points per game last season. The Roadrunners forced 19 turnovers Friday night while holding the Tritons to just 38 percent shooting from the field.

In addition to Rice, Richard Andrews made his Roadrunner debut and scored nine points with a team–high eight rebounds. Robby Peters came off the bench to lead the Tritons with 12 points.

Bakersfield returns to action Saturday when it hosts six–time defending CCAA champion Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. UCSD plays at Cal State L.A. Saturday night.
