BOX SCORE
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State Bakersfield womens basketball team rode its dynamic duo backcourt tandem of Katie McElree (Apple Valley HS) and Shakaria Jones (North Hills/College of the Canyons) to a convincing 8555 victory over regional contender Northwest Nazarene University in the final game of the 2004 Classic Western Shootout at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.
The win gives CSUB (52 overall) the tournament title as well. Both CSUB and Cal Poly Pomona finished tournament play 20, but CSUB wins on the tiebreaker of fewest point allowed (110 to 151).
McElree had a career game, scoring a personal record 34 points to pace both teams. She reached the milestone despite sitting for eight minutes in the second half. Jones added a careerhigh 25 points as the Crusaders had no answer for McElrees versatility and Jones quickness.
CSUB spotted Northwest Nazarene a 90 lead to start the game then stormed back to take control before the half was seven minutes old. The Roadrunners grabbed the lead for good at 1817 on a McElree threepointer. The lead grew steadily until Jones went coast to coast at the firsthalf buzzer to put CSUB ahead 4833.
The Runner lead was 20 points six minutes into the second half and the Crusaders never got close again.
Sophomore center Danielle Pridgen, who earned alltournament honors for NNU, led the Crusaders with 15 points and eight rebounds. Nicole Shutte added 11 points off the bench.
In addition to Jones and McElree, senior center Charlrel Jackson (Inglewood/Norfolk State) reached double figures with 10 points.
McElree and Jones earned alltournament honors for their efforts. Joining the CSUB pair and Pridgen on the alltournament team were Casey Taylor of Glenville State and MVP Candice Allen of Cal Poly Pomona.
CSUB will take two weeks off for Christmas break before returning to action Dec. 29 when it hosts Franklin Pierce College of New Hampshire at 3 p.m. in Centennial Garden.
Northwest Nazarene will play at Albertson College on Dec. 14.
CAL POLY POMONA 81, GLENVILLE STATE 75
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Senior forward Candice Allen poured in an Icardo Center record 50 points to lead Cal Poly Pomona to an 8175 upset of No. 9 Glenville State College Saturday evening at the Classic Western Shootout in Bakersfield.
Allens 50 established an Icardo Center recordmens or womensestablished by former CSUB star Kenny Warren against Grand Canyon in March of 1993.
Allen scored 15 points in the final seven minutes as she was basically the only Bronco option as they played through eight lead changes and five ties over the 7:07 of regulation.
Allen scored six points in a 123 run that erased a 5547 deficit and put Cal Poly ahead 5958. In became a shootout from that point, and neither team blinked until Allen came up with a steal and driving layup to cut Cal Polys deficit to 7371 with just over two minutes remaining. That sparked a gameending 122 Bronco run that sealed the win for Cal Poly.
Lauren Stayton came off the bench to score 13 points for Cal Poly as the only Bronco other than Allen to score more than seven points.
By contrast, Glenville State placed four scorers in double figures with Casey Taylor and Rachel Redick sharing teamhigh honors with 17 points. Taylor added a gamehigh 12 rebounds while junior center Danae Dobbins scored 15 points and blocked eight shots for the Pioneers.
