BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSUB men's basketball team added size and versatility to its backcourt with the signing of Rocklin High School guard Cody Kale, Head Coach Keith Brown announced Friday.
Kale, a 6–3, 190 combo guard, earned a bushel full of awards at Rocklin, where he led the Thunder to 55 wins, the 2009 CIF Division II Championship game and a 2010 CIF NorCal Division II Quarterfinal appearance.
“Cody can play multiple positions and has a great feel and understanding of the game,” says CSUB Head Coach Keith Brown. “He's a tremendous kid and a good student. He's the total package.”
Kale was first team All–California player this past season, when he averaged 23.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He scored in double figures in all 32 games, including 25 games of 20 or more points and six games of 30 or more.
He scored a career–high 37 points versus Woodcreek High School. Among his four double–doubles were a 21–point and career–high 12–rebound game in a 67–60 win over Grant High School. He also had 26 points and a career–high 11 assists in an 84–71 win over Terra Linda as a senior.
“Cody can score in a variety of ways and he is a really good passer,” says Brown. “I think he can get on the floor and compete at a high level right away. Still, he has room to grow and will do so when he gets on the floor with Division I caliber players on a consistent basis.”
Kale will become the second player from Rocklin to wear the CSUB Blue and Gold in men's basketball. Former big man Jeff Kuehl, a stalwart on the 1993 and 1994 NCAA Division II National Champion teams, also hailed from Rocklin, though he prepped at Roseville High.
Kale is the second player to join the 'Runners for the 2010–11 season. Earlier this signing period, CSUB signed big man Kregg Jones from the Army–Navy Academy in San Diego.
