    The Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team received a boost this week when junior defensive specialist Lindsay Long (Stockdale HS) announced she was rejoining the team. She is expected to be in uniform by this weekend’s matches.
    Long left the team at the end of the 2005 season to focus on her academics. She carries a 3.22 grade point average as student in CSUB’s highly–regarded nursing program. With the Roadrunners carrying just nine players—leaving no substitutes in their 6–2 offensive system—she decided to pitch in by returning this week.
    The team’s primary defensive specialist in 2005, Long should resume those duties immediately. With four players redshirting this season, the Roadrunners have played without a defensive specialist through the first five matches. She also may see playing time as a libero, with freshman Kayla Williamson (Stockdale HS) shifting to defensive specialist in that scenario.
    Long averaged 1.6 digs per game while playing in 95 of the team’s 104 games as a sophomore in 2005. An effective server in addition to her defensive abilities, she posted 26 aces against just 11 service errors last season.
